Gelap Dan Sepi

The Sanur ocean front at night is really a rather quiet, rather deserted place. I used to marvel at this when I first came to Bali. It seemed to me that people would always be at the beach. Of course, the only beaches I knew beforehand were those frigid beaches in Oregon, with their driving winds and their sneaker waves, and at night as dark as the belly of a whale. But the warm, tropical beach ... why wouldn't people be on it 24/7? Well, in any case, they're not. For the most part, you will only find isolated knots of tourists at the fancy restaurants attached to the fancy hotels. Therefore, a night walk on the beach front is quiet and peaceful--and I guess it's actually best that way. There are no sellers on the beach at night, and most of the local warungs have been closed up for the day. It's a good place and a good time to be alone with one's thoughts, to just enjoy the silence, save for the sound of one's own feet on the sandy path.
