Eye Has Not Seen

It is overwhelming to step outside oneself and take the long view of all that has passed before, all of those 'individuals', so completely alive to themselves in their own time, dust now and less than dust--even those who "made a mark", now but dimly remembered or remembered not at all. It is overwhelming, and more--it is unbearable. One has to return to his own precious skin. He is glad to return, for this is something that he can manage. And yet an even more overwhelming, nearly inconceivable miracle lies in the spirit of indistinguishable man: Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for us.
