Kites and So On

I have been enjoying a very unusual period of weather here in Bali, much cooler than usual, and yet still mostly sunny. Especially in the morning and at night, the air is 'crisp' and there is a continual breeze, such that I have not had to use the air-conditioning at all while sleeping. I don't and never have used it anyway during the day, so as an added bonus, this cooler weather is saving me money on electricity use. I merely open the kitchen window, the sliding garden doors, maybe put the fan on low, and sleep like a baby.

In fact, the period between June and September is always the most livable period here in south Bali, while from mid October to the following May it is damned hot, sometimes unbearably so. But I do have the benefit here in the new place of opening doors and windows in both back and front, thus allowing the air to circulate. At Kampung Kumpul, there was but one door and one window, both at the front, and the hot air simply came in and collected within the house. Even the back walls felt hot to the touch. Additionally, of course, the miniature air-conditioner there was essentially useless. On the other hand, I have so far turned on the new AC only at its lowest fan setting.

Because it is consistently windy, there are hundreds of kites in the sky. Indonesians love kites, and both adults and children can be seen launching theirs every day. During the day, the sky is speckled with kites of all types and colors, large and small, and at night you can see the lights that have been attached to many of them, zipping about like an invasion of UFOs.
